NEW SLEEK, BLACK & MINIMALIST COFFEE BAR AT KENT RIDGE OPENS AT 8AM

PYROAST first opened as a coffee stall at Sprout Hub last year, alongside other food stalls within a converted canteen space.

Opened by professional coffee roaster, SCAE Q-and-R Grader, Young Tan, whose father has more than 30 years of experience in the traditional coffee trade (Tan Lee Et Food Industry), PYROAST has since expanded to a second outlet at Science Park.

The outlet at Science Park is their first standalone cafe, a coffee experiential outlet decked in a sleek, black and minimalist design, with a single long communal table ideal for cupping sessions.

All their coffee equipments are black in colour, from the Mavam espresso machine to the coffee grinder, pourover kettle, coffee cups and takeaway cups.

Using the Mavam’s latest Standard Mach Two espresso machine that uses a game-changing Piano Key Group Activation, including the new Slap Activation Steam which reduces the conventional twisting and turning actions.

2 house blends, Midnight Glow and Sunny Sunshine are available for their espresso-based drinks: Black ($4.50), White ($5.50), Piccolo ($5) and Mocha ($5.50).

Other Specialty drinks includes Genmaicha ($6), Dirty Genmaicha ($6.50) and Chocolate ($6).

Optional customisation are available: Iced (+$0.50), Extra espresso shot (+$0.50), Decaf Beans (+$1) and Oat Milk (+$1).

My cup of Flat White ($5.50) using the Midnight Glow blend was medium bodied, smooth, robust with nutty notes and low acidity.

Apart from Specialty coffee, PYROAST also serves traditional beverages such as Kopi/ Kopi-O/ Kopi-C ($1.50), Teh/ Teh-O/ Teh-C ($1.50) and Yuan Yang ($2) with a choice to add butter at an additional $0.50.

pyroast7

Serious coffee drinkers can look forward to an extensive list of single origin beans for the V60 Pourover Coffee ($8 onwards).

Single origins beans include BRAZIL ESMERALDA NATURAL, COLOMBIA AMAPOLA TARRAZU, ETHIOPIAN GUJI ANASORA, INDONESIA HEN CM MICROLOT, INDONESIA SUNDA RADIOPHARE, RWANDA INZOVU SUPREME, PANAMA GEISHA FST.

A small selection of bakes such as Butterhorn ($4.50), Cheese Danish ($5.50), Croissant + PB Jelly ($5.50), Almond Croissant ($5.50), Swiss roll ($6) and Terrine ($8) can be found on their menu.

The Swiss roll ($6) comes in 3 different flavours: Matcha, Yuzu and Lavender, supplied by Matchaya.

pyroast9

The Yuzu Swiss roll ($6) comes with yuzu-infused sponge with fresh cream and yuzu compote in the middle.

The sponge is light and airy, with sweetness from the fresh cream that counterbalances the citrus notes from the yuzu.

The Croissant + PB Jelly ($5.50) on the other hand was less buttery and tasted a little burnt due to the pre-heat before serving.

The plus point is the generous amount of jam and peanut butter added to give it more depth, adding more flavours to the other wise plain croissant.

pyroast11

Opened at 8am daily, PYROAST will be a good stop to grab a cup of coffee for the much-needed caffeine fix before lectures for the students studying at NUS next door, or the hospital staffs working at NUH nearby.
